Install/Reinstall Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine

Summary : Microsoft SQL Server 2000 does not show as INSTALLED in Server Tools (instead of Installed/Yes - Started/Yes - Default/Yes it shows ??? ??? ???). The SQL Service Manager tray icon does not work.

Permanent Fix from Microsoft : Microsoft SQL Server 2000 MSDE is installed with ChiroPulse Advanced Server. If SQL Server fails to install, or a previous corrupt install is present, it must be removed and reinstalled properly. Follow the instructions below. Return to tech article index

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Backup your computer and create a Windows Restore Checkpoint if one has not been created today or yesterday. If you have any programs that use Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine, backup the data to removable media and ensure your ability to restore.

  2. Go to Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs. Look for Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine and if present select it and click REMOVE. If ChiroPulse Server is still installed remove that also.

  3. Windows Start menu >> select RUN. Now type in  c:\program files  and press enter.

  4. Delete the folder named "Microsoft SQL Server"

  5. Now reinsert your ChiroPulse Advanced CD and from the Installation Homepage proceed to "Install and Configure Database Server". After the initial installation, Microsoft MSDE installer will proceed. Follow the Quick Install instructions and exit this page

if the above fails or Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine does not appear in the Add/Remove Programs...

 

  1. Windows Start menu >> select RUN. Now type in  msconfig  and press enter.

  2. In the services tab, click services title to sort by name

  3. Uncheck MSSQLSERVER. Now press OK and reboot.

  4. Upon reboot use Selective Startup and click "do not show again". This will temporarily disable the problematic MS SQL Server service.

  5. When restarted, go to Windows Start menu >> select RUN. Now type in  c:\program files  and press enter.

  6. Delete the folder named "Microsoft SQL Server"

  7. Now reinsert your ChiroPulse Advanced CD and from the Installation Homepage proceed to "Install and Configure Database Server". After the initial installation, Microsoft MSDE installer will proceed. Follow the Quick Install instructions and exit this page
